My Birthday Wine - Marqués De Vitoria Rioja Reserva 2014 93 points

Updated: Jul 22, 2021

Rioja D.O.C., Spain

One of my favourite varietals is Tempranillo. I'm a sentimental creature and a good Tempranillo always brings back memories of those years I lived in Spain...good food, good

wine and friendly conversation wherever I went. So let me tell you about this lovely Rioja that I enjoyed with my birthday dinner. First, it has a rich ruby colour. Next, a highly perfumed nose piques your interest with notes of ripe cherries, blackcurrants, vanilla, spice, kid leather,(think gloves) mocha and cedar. The ultra harmonious palate reflects these flavours with a pronounced fruity emphasis and vibrant acidity. Then there's a very long, sensuous and fragrant finish. This wine truly engages your senses from the first whiff to the last lingering drop. It's a wine you can savour with a variety of food. Roast lamb is a top choice, because the acidity and tart fruit flavours of the wine balance the richness of the lamb. But it's a versatile wine and those same features work well with pork, duck, spicy shrimp or bouillabaisse. It's also delightful with dark chocolate or berry desserts. Lots of possibilities!

Aged minimum 12 mos. in French and American oak. Definitely one to remember and buy again. This vintage won the Gold Medal, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2020. Highly recommended. 93 pts.
