Douro D.O.P., Portugal
It's November. Although winter is just around the corner and we are spending more time indoors, especially with lockdown restrictions, we can still enjoy little luxuries at home. This opulent Port from Portugal's Quinta do Crasto is a fine example of how to make the long evenings more enjoyable. So put on your cosy slippers and pour a glass of this gem!
My review:
A satiny Vintage Port crafted from grapes harvested from 60-year-old vines which were grown in schist soil. Opaque dark purple, with a nose giving concentrated ripe blackberries and hints of sweet pipe tobacco and licorice. The palate shows abundant ripe dark berry flavours and a very silky, unctuous mouthfeel with polished, elegant tannins. Lingering ripe berry finish. This Port was aged for 2 years in Portuguese oak and bottled wthout fining. Made using the traditional lagares (stone tanks) and foot-trodden grapes. The result is heavenly! The texture and balance of this Port is superb! Vintage Ports are only made in exceptional years, when conditions are optimal.
Drink as a dessert wine, or pair with creamy blue cheese such as Gorgonzola, with fois gras or nuts. This would also make a terrific #gift during the upcoming holiday season. 95 points
